Sheila Masson Biography
Born just outside of London, England, to Scottish parents, Sheila Masson emigrated to the United States in 1989 as a teenager. She attended Central Saint Martins School of Art and Design in London and the Kent Institute of Art and Design in Maidstone, England, and earned a bachelor's honors degree in illustration and photography.
Sheila returned to the United States after graduation and spent four years working as a photo researcher and editor for several photo stock houses in New York, while continuing to photograph personal projects and freelance assignments. In 2000 Sheila relocated to Los Angeles and began working as an assistant to photographer Lauren Greenfield as well as beginning her own career as a photojournalist.
In May 2002 she traveled to Bosnia to shoot a story on the International Commission on Missing Persons (ICMP) and its continuing work to exhume mass war graves and conduct DNA testing of the remains. After assisting and freelancing for 2 1/2 years in Los Angeles, Sheila relocated at the end of 2002 to San Francisco where she is now a freelance photojournalist and photo editor/researcher.
